How This Neurodivergent Parent Picks a Summer Camp

Neurodivergent families are not necessarily looking for a camp that can do everything.  We are looking for a camp that knows what it can do, communicates clearly, supports its staff, and is honest about what it is still learning.  That gives us what we need to make a good decision.

You Can Be Hopeful AND Exhausted

You can be hopeful AND exhausted.  You can love camp and desperately need a break from camp.  You can believe deeply in the work and also wonder whether you are the person who should keep doing it.  You can have had an incredible summer and still be completely depleted.

Why I’m Writing About Camp

I really do think camp matters now more than ever.  And I also think being a camp professional is getting harder.  The systems that support camps are getting more and more arduous to navigate:  the insurance, the liability, the parents, the referral networks, the challenging behaviors, aging properties, aging leadership.  There is just… a lot. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I want to help people stay in love with camp.  Because I am still very much in love with camp.  I love summer camp as a place.  I love summer camp as an industry.
